A safe shelf for maxed-out dogs โ and a must for every wolf.

What the kennel is
The kennel is a storage tab inside the ๐ Kennel screen. Dogs placed there
are removed from the meadow entirely. They still exist โ you can pull them back out any
time there's an empty cell โ but they're not on the board.
Think of it as a shelf, not a room. The dog is safe, but it also isn't doing anything while it's up there.
Maxed dogs only โ except wolves. A dog must have reached your current
merge cap โ the level shown at the top of the meadow as "Max Lv" โ before
the "Store in Kennel" button appears. The cap climbs with Player Level:
Wolves are the exception. They can be stored at any level, and
usually should be โ see Wolves in storage below.
๐ What storage protects against
Safe from auto-merge. The game's chain reactions can't touch a stored dog,
because it isn't on the board.
Safe from sickness spreading. Sick dogs infect their neighbours on the
meadow. A stored dog has no neighbours.
Safe from new hunger, aggression and sickness rolls. Those statuses are
rolled when a dog is adopted, merged, or bred โ never on a dog already sitting in
the kennel. (A dog that was already hungry when you stored it will still be hungry when you
take it out, and you can still feed it from its action panel.)
Safe from wolf agitation. A wolf on the meadow can make its neighbours
aggressive every tick. Stored dogs (and stored wolves) can't agitate anyone, because they
aren't on the board โ and nobody can bite them, either.
Counts toward your level unlock. The game checks stored dogs when
checking whether you've reached the next player level. Storage doesn't lock your progress.
๐บ Wolves in storage
Wolves are the one exception to the maxed-only rule. A wolf can be stored at
any level, and most of the time it should be.
The reason is simple: a wolf sitting on the meadow agitates its neighbours.
Every game tick there's a chance an adjacent dog becomes aggressive โ which then has to be
calmed for 20 ๐ช. But the bigger problem is what happens next.
The meadow bites wolves back. Every time a wolf agitates a dog, there's a
chance that dog turns around and bites the wolf. Each bite drops the wolf a level.
A Lv 1 wolf that gets bitten is removed from the meadow entirely. A Lv 2 wolf
usually becomes a Lv 1 wolf and vanishes on the next tick. If you want a wolf to survive long
enough to reach the Wolfkeeper, get it off the meadow.
What wolves can't do. A wolf can't be tamed, groomed, bathed, or
dressed โ the "Treat / Wash" buttons don't appear on a wolf. It also can't be
sold at the Market. The only coin value a wolf has is the Wolfkeeper.
What a wolf can do: it can get hungry and sick like any dog, and you can send it to
the Vet and cure it for 40 ๐ช like any dog. Don't be surprised if a wolf needs feeding โ it
will.
The three exceptions where a wolf should leave the kennel:
โข Merging. Two wolves at the same level merge into one of the next level up.
Pull both out, merge, put the survivor straight back. Never leave them out between operations.
โข Court Recruits (breeding stock). Two wolves at Lv 4+ that are in Court
Recruits (not the kennel) breed wolf pups at the parents' level for 150 ๐ช. Each pup can
be delivered to the Wolfkeeper. But plan for escalation โ see the warning below.
โข About to deliver. The Wolfkeeper only sees wolves on the meadow or in Court
Recruits. Pull a wolf out of the kennel, deliver it, and it's gone โ you don't need a meadow
cell for long.
The Wolfkeeper raises his price โ and his standards. His first delivery takes
any wolf Lv 3+ for 650 ๐ช. But after each delivery he wants a higher-level wolf, and pays more:
A Lv 4 wolf-breeding pair is only useful for deliveries 3 and 4. After that
you'll need to breed your Lv 4 pups together to make Lv 5s, and then Lv 6s โ or keep a pair of
Lv 6 wolves as permanent breeders.
๐ฏ When storage is worth it
Storage solves exactly one problem: a finished dog is taking up a cell it can't
do anything with. A maxed dog can't merge. It can still join a pack, be delivered
to Court, be sold at the Market, or be bred โ so don't store a dog you still need for those.

Store it?
Why
Wolf, any level
โ Yes
Agitates the meadow otherwise; safe here
Maxed dog, nothing else going on
โ Yes
Frees a cell, nothing lost
Maxed dog, in a pack
โ No
You can't re-add a stored dog to a pack โ keep working pack dogs on the board
Maxed dog, breeding stock
โ No
Breeding needs it in a Recruits tab, not the kennel
Maxed dog, Court candidate
โ No
Move it to ๐ฐ Court Recruits instead
Maxed dog you could sell
๐ค Maybe
Sell first if it's 100% tamed + bathed โ coins beat a shelf
Dog below the cap (non-wolf)
โ Can't
Must be maxed first
Keep two cells free at all times. Breeding in the Lab needs an empty cell,
and so does returning a dog from the Vet or from storage. Running at 36/36 locks you out of
half the game.
๐ The real history
A kennel originally meant a dog's shelter โ and by extension, a place where
dogs are bred and kept. Working kennels go back to at least the medieval period: hunting
packs were kept, fed and trained at the estate, and the word "kennel" was used for the whole
operation, not just the building.
The stud book โ a written record of a dog's lineage โ is a 19th-century
invention, tied to the same Victorian show boom that standardized breeds. The Kennel Club in
the UK (1873) and the American Kennel Club (1884) were founded specifically to keep these
records. In a very real sense, the modern idea of "a breed" came from someone deciding to
write a dog's family tree down.
Kennel Keeper's note
In the game, "storage" is a pause button. In real kennels, a dog in residence is still
exercised, trained and worked every day. The point of a kennel isn't to park a dog โ it's
to keep several dogs safe at once. The game's storage slot is the parking end of that idea.
๐ฏ Practical tips
Store wolves the moment you get one. The only safe place for a wolf is
the kennel โ or Court Recruits if you're building the wolf line. Pull it out only to merge,
breed, or deliver, and put it straight back.
Don't leave a wolf next to a dog you care about. A single agitation roll
can bite your Lv 6 pack leader down a level and break the whole pack's "same level"
requirement. It is never worth the risk.
Store after the dog has finished its job, not before. Pack leaders and
Court candidates need to stay on the board.
Consider the Market before storing. A 100% tamed and bathed surplus dog
might be worth 400โ1,500 ๐ช at the Market. That's usually better than a shelf.
Pull a stored dog back out any time. There's no cooldown, no cost.
Stored dogs are safe but idle. They're not helping with anything โ
keep that in mind before stashing a good breeder.
Maxed dogs still count for level unlock. So stashing a Lv 3 dog at Player
Level 1 won't stop you reaching Level 2.
Don't stash a dog you're about to deliver or sell. Pull it out, do the
delivery or sale, and it's gone โ you don't need to hold the cell.
